Music and Jingles before and after news bulletins

BBC Radio 2

On BBC Radio 2, prior to the Graham Norton show, the news jingle prior to the news is of a very serious tone. It has a catchy tune to it, so it is designed to make people realise that it is the news the moment they hear it. It lasts about 5 seconds, and is most likely digitally created so as to create the catchy effect.

After the news, there is no jingle. Instead, it goes straight into advertising the radio. This shows that a news jingle is necessary at the beginning of the news, but it might not be necessary at the end of it. This may be because, before the news, the jingle may attract people to listen to it, and having a news jingle at the end of the news would not need to do that.

Magic FM

On Magic FM, the news jingle prior to the news lasts only 2 seconds, and consists of one high, digitally produced note. This may be because Magic, in comparison to BBC Radio 2, do not necessarily see the news as an integral part of their show, and something that their audience listen to the show for. Therefore, a catchy jingle may not be necessary for the news because it is not important enough to the station.

After the news, there is no jingle. Instead their is a jingle for the next show on Magic FM. This shows, like on BBC Radio 2, that a news jingle is necessary at the beginning of the news, but it might not be necessary at the end of it. This may be because, before the news, the jingle may attract people to listen to it, and having a news jingle at the end of the news would not need to do that.
